À Moitié Gommé
for cello (2010)This piece is a reflection on memory and the way it distorts things; however, the center is missing, as the object being distorted is never presented in its original form.
Consisting of 10 unbound, unnumbered pages, the score unfolds the same basic 17-bar pattern again and again. However, each new page distorts the sounds heard within this pattern differently, sometimes radically so, as though attempts of varying success were being made to reconstitute some half-clear memory. The order of the pages is left to the performer to determine, the tempo of each page being determined by an indication at the bottom right of the previous page, meaning that many different readings are possible.
More prosaically, A Moitié Gommé uses the range of contemporary cello technique to produce a wide variety of sounds, alternately grainy, etherial or intensely energetic.
