In this short piece, whose character is at once withdrawn and nervous, nothing is explicitely stated; there are only suggestions, transitory states, glimpses. The piece is made up of three principal elements: calm, stable chords mainly played by the strings; short, rapidly repeated chords animated by microscopic variations; and fugitive, rapid figures, mainly given to the winds, which vanish as soon as they have appeared and leave behind little trace.
