Written very slowly during an especially cold Canadian winter, the Two Pieces were an important step in my evolution as a composer. Both pieces attempted organic developments of a relatively restricted number of motifs. The first, marked Lento, consists of successions of limpid phrases in perpetual imitation and development. The second is characterized by rhythmic ostinatos, large intervallic leaps and a constant nervous energy.
